Most of the roads armies marched along in this war began as Native trails. In 1749 and 1750 the Delaware leader Nemacolin and the Maryland frontiersman Thomas Cresap marked and improved an old Delaware and Shawnee path across the Alleghenies for the Ohio Company of Virginia. George Washington used it on his way to Fort Necessity in 1754. The next year General Braddock's army widened it into a wagon road and dragged its cannon toward Fort Duquesne, and the route became known as Braddock's Road. Parts of it later became the National Road, and U.S. Route 40 still follows sections of the path Nemacolin marked.
This warrior walks the trail at an easy pace, his musket trailed low in one hand and his eyes on the way ahead. His head is painted red, with a black band of paint across his eyes, and a long dark lock of hair hangs at the back. A silver chain and beaded strap hang at his chest, and silver bands circle his arms and wrists. Below are a green breechcloth striped in yellow, red leggings with beaded white garters, and moccasins. Line out a war party in single file behind him with Native Warrior Walking with Caution, "Fresh Tracks" Native Warrior Checking Trail and Native Warrior with Bow and Arrow.
