The M249 SAW is a two-man weapon. The gunner works the belt-fed light machine gun — 200-round assault packs of 5.56mm NATO cycling through at 750 rounds per minute. The assistant gunner — "A-gunner" in squad shorthand — carries the spare barrel and extra ammunition, spots targets, reloads for the gunner, and takes over if the gunner goes down. Together they're the base of fire for a Ranger fire team, the belt-fed suppression that lets the two riflemen maneuver. In Mogadishu on October 3, 1993, the SAW crews kept Somali militia's heads down long enough for the rest of the squad to bound to the next piece of cover.

The two-piece set shows the team in the prone firing position: the gunner behind the M249 on its integrated bipod, right hand on the pistol grip, left hand supporting the buttstock, aimed forward; the A-gunner just to the right, prone with M16A2 covering the security arc while a rucksack of spare ammo rides on his back. Both wear three-color desert combat uniform, tactical vests, and Kevlar helmets with PVS-7 night vision mounts. Pair the team with a Ranger Fire Team maneuvering under their fire, with Ranger with M249 SAW as a second gun in the squad's other fire team, or with the Ranger NCO Shouting Orders designating targets.
