The Regiment von Donop's American war opened in the marsh and woodland south of Brooklyn Heights on August 27, 1776. The Hessian musketeer regiments, brigaded under General Leopold von Heister, marched up from Flatbush in the center of Howe's three-column attack while Cornwallis's flanking column rolled in from the east — the Continental defenders on the Heights of Guan were caught between two anvils and broken by the afternoon. Von Donop's men followed Washington's retreating army across the East River, up Manhattan, and into New Jersey through the autumn, quartering at Trenton, Bordentown, and Princeton before the Christmas reverse. They served on through the Philadelphia campaign and the Yorktown lines as part of the roughly 30,000 German auxiliaries George III hired into his American war.

This W. Britain figure shows a musketeer of the regiment in the act of firing — musket leveled, butt at the shoulder, eye over the barrel. The full musketeer order is on view from this angle: dark blue coat with yellow collar and cuffs and the red lining showing at the turnback, yellow waistcoat, white cross-belts supporting the cartridge box and bayonet scabbard, black tricorne edged white with the Hessian cockade, and the wrapped queue hanging down the back. The cartridge box brass plate, sword hilt, and bayonet scabbard ride in clear sight on the hips. He completes the firing posture begun in the reaching and alert poses from the same regiment, opposed across the line by Continental troops like the kneeling firing infantryman of 1777.
