In 1754 Robert Rogers of New Hampshire was indicted for his part in a counterfeiting ring. The case was still hanging over him in 1755 when the colony began raising men for the expedition against the French at Crown Point. Rogers recruited about fifty men and got a captain's commission in the New Hampshire regiment. Its colonel, Joseph Blanchard, was the judge who had presided over the counterfeiting case, and the case never came to trial. When the regiment was disbanded that autumn, Rogers stayed out scouting through the winter. On 23 March 1756 Governor William Shirley authorized him to raise an independent company of rangers, paid directly by the Crown.

This eight-figure set shows a ranger company in action. Two men kneel to fire and two stand firing. Two more hold their muskets across their bodies, making ready, and two are loading, muskets upright in front of them. Each wears a blue bonnet, a green coat with green leggings, and buff breeches, with a grey blanket roll slung over one shoulder, and a brown pouch and cartridge box at the hip. Lead them with Rogers Rangers with Robert Rogers. Set them against American Woodland Indians (French Allies), with Don Troiani's Rogers' Rangers Private, 1758 print on the wall behind the display.
