While infantry and cavalry officers usually bought their commissions, Royal Artillery officers earned theirs. The first two permanent companies of artillery were formed at Woolwich by royal warrant on 26 May 1716, and in 1722 they became the core of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Gunnery called for mathematics, so in 1741 another royal warrant founded the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich to train artillery and engineer officers. A cadet who passed the course was commissioned without paying for it, and from then on he rose by seniority, not purchase. The system lasted until purchase was abolished across the army in 1871.

The officer directs the gun with one arm out, in a blue coat over a red waistcoat heavily laced in gold, a gold-laced tricorne and boots. The sergeant stands with his linstock, the pole that held the slow match used to fire the gun. Four gunners work the piece: one carries the rammer and sponge, one a bucket and handspike, and two bring up handspikes and slung firelocks. All wear the artillery's blue coats with red facings and yellow lace. The bronze gun sits on a grey-blue carriage. For an artillery duel, set the gun opposite French Colonial Artillery and French Artillery Gun (Seven Years War). To support a British line, place it beside British Infantry North America 1750.
