George Patton believed that a soldier who saluted smartly and kept his boots clean was a soldier who would stand and fight, and he drove his Third Army half-mad enforcing it. Even near the front he demanded the small disciplines — helmets on, ties worn, chins shaved, salutes crisp — convinced that a man drilled to obey in trivial things would obey when it counted, under fire. Plenty of GIs grumbled it was martinet nonsense; plenty of others credited that hard-nosed standard when Third Army wheeled north and fought its way into Bastogne. There was an irony in it, though: close to the enemy, men were often told not to salute at all, lest a watching sniper pick off the officer receiving it.

The GI stands rigid at attention, right hand to the brim of his netted helmet, M1 Garand grounded at his side. He has an obvious partner: General Patton is sculpted in the very act of returning a salute, so the two figures face each other as a ready-made vignette — the commander and the soldier snapping to. Post him also at a checkpoint beside the sentry on Guard Duty and A Pair of G.I.s. In a diorama a single saluting figure turns a scene into a story — someone has just arrived, and rank has entered the frame.
