On July 17, 1863, two weeks after Gettysburg, the largest battle ever fought in Indian Territory took place at Honey Springs Depot in present-day Oklahoma. The 29th Texas Cavalry fought there on foot, like most Confederate horsemen in the Trans-Mississippi, with the horses held to the rear. It had rained the night before, and much of the Confederate ammunition, loaded with poor-quality Mexican powder, turned damp and misfired. Men snapped caps on muskets that wouldn't fire. The Texans' revolvers, with the charges sealed in their cylinders, were more reliable. Texas cavalrymen prized revolvers and often carried two, and at close range a sergeant's pistol could still keep his men in the fight.
The figure stands with his feet set and his revolver braced across his left forearm for a steady aim, a practical shooting position for a man fighting on foot. His saber hangs at his side, and his holster and cap pouch ride on his belt. He wears the Confederate cavalry uniform as K&C renders it for this range: gray shell jacket with yellow cavalry trim and sergeant's chevrons, sky-blue trousers, and a gray kepi with a yellow band. Build a dismounted cavalry line with the Kneeling Trooper Firing Carbine and Trooper Cocking Carbine, or bring up the regiment's colors with the 29th Texas Cavalry Flagbearer.
