The Nazi rallies were engineered to overwhelm, and sound was one of their most powerful tools. The regime understood that a crowd could be moved by rhythm and noise in ways it could never be moved by argument — so it drowned reason in spectacle: massed bands, blaring fanfares, tens of thousands singing in unison, and, underneath it all, the relentless pounding of drums. The beat of the side drum set the pace of the marching columns and the pulse of the crowd, a physical rhythm that bound thousands of individuals into a single obedient mass. Combined with torchlight, banners and the cathedral-like staging of the rallies, it produced a deliberate, almost hypnotic emotional surrender — the manufacture of fanaticism, one drumbeat at a time.

The figure is a Leibstandarte SS side drummer in black parade dress with a white drummer's apron, sticks poised over a red-and-white side drum. With the collection's SS Trumpeter he forms the musical core of a parade, setting the beat for the goose-stepping columns behind them like the SS Flagbearer, all performing before the Nuremberg rally stand. In a diorama the musicians are what a silent shelf of figures most needs — the implied sound that turned a parade into an instrument of mass persuasion.
