In September 1944, Operation Market Garden hung on a single road. The 101st Airborne dropped into Holland to seize the highway running north from Eindhoven and keep it open for the armored column driving toward Arnhem. The Germans cut it again and again, and the paratroopers fought running battles up and down the embankments to reopen it — the men called it "Hell's Highway." A machine-gun team was the anchor of that kind of fight: the .30 cal M1919 laid down the base of fire that pinned the enemy in place while the riflemen worked around a flank, and it held the ground the moment it was taken.
The set poses a two-man team prone behind cover — one firing the M1919 on its bipod, the other spotting and feeding — in jump uniforms and netted helmets on a single groundwork base. It's the fire element of a squad-in-action diorama: pair it with the second 101st Airborne M1919 Crew for interlocking guns, add the maneuver element with the 101st Airborne Advancing with BAR, and place the whole action under Capt. Dick Winters.
W. Britain model 25240. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Two-figure gun team with an M1919 .30 cal machine gun on a sculpted groundwork base. Boxed.
