This knight rode under one of the heroes of the First Crusade: Robert II, Count of Flanders, remembered ever after as "Robert of Jerusalem." In 1095 he led the Flemish east and stayed the whole brutal course — the siege of Nicaea, the desperate field at Dorylaeum, the year-long agony of Antioch, and the storming of Jerusalem on 15 July 1099. He came home so laden with relics and renown that the byname stuck for life. He died in 1111, thrown from his horse and trampled during a campaign in France — an oddly ordinary end for a man who had crossed a continent to take the holy city.

The Green Knight is one of Robert's Flemish riders. King & Country give him a green-and-white livery and a rampant lion on banner and horse-cloth — the beast that would become the emblem of Flanders in the generations after this crusade. He sits a caparisoned horse in mail and a green-crested cap, a blue cloak at his back and a long red-and-white kite shield on his arm. Set him with a mounted Crusader Knight and the Crusader Priest of Jerusalem — the city his lord helped storm in 1099 — or beside the range's other bright heraldic rider, the Red Swabian Knight. In a diorama he leads a Flemish lance at the head of a First Crusade column.
