To the nations of the Great Lakes and the Ohio country, gifts were how an alliance was kept alive. The French had handed out cloth, coats, guns, powder and lead at councils for generations, and warriors expected the British to do the same once Canada fell. Instead, in February 1761 General Jeffery Amherst ordered the presents cut back. He considered them bribery and was under orders to save money. He also restricted the powder and shot that families needed for hunting. Sir William Johnson, Britain's superintendent of Indian affairs, warned him it would damage relations. In May 1763 warriors across the region rose against the British forts.

This warrior stands easy in his new coat, a long blue wool coat worn open and trimmed in yellow lace at the buttonholes and cuffs, with red banded in yellow beneath it. He holds his musket across his body. His head is painted red, with dark paint around his eyes and feathers tied in his scalp lock. A beaded bag hangs from a strap across his chest, above dark blue leggings with beaded garters and moccasins. For a trading-post or council scene, stand him with Native Warrior with Souvenir Grenadier Cap, whose cap was taken rather than given.
