Once the siege was broken, the fighting around Bastogne did not end — it turned outward. Through January 1945 the 101st went over to the attack, grinding north and east to clear the Germans from the Bois Jacques woods and villages like Foy and Noville. Attacking in winter carried its own cruelty: a man in a dark uniform crossing an open, snow-covered field stood out like ink on paper, with no cover and nowhere to hide from machine guns sited along the tree lines. Advancing meant moving carefully from one scrap of concealment to the next, reading the ground, and accepting that the last stretch to the objective would have to be crossed in the open.
The figure eases forward in a wary crouch, M1 Garand leveled, in an M-43 jacket and netted helmet with a full pack — a paratrooper on the attack across the snow. Build the assault on Foy around him: send Lt. Ronald Speirs sprinting through the village, take direction from the Airborne Officer Directing Movement, and push off from "Welcome to Bastogne".
