Airborne units were volunteers to a man, and their officers set the tone. Paratroopers had chosen the extra pay, the extra danger, and the jump wings, and they expected to be led by men who went first — first out the aircraft door, first forward on the ground. That ethos showed at Bastogne, where the 101st rarely sat still on the defensive: officers pushed local counterattacks to retake lost ground and villages, wresting the initiative back wherever they could. Directing movement in the snow — arm up, voice cutting through the noise of a firefight — an officer kept an attack driving forward when cold, fear, and confusion all pulled the other way.
The figure is caught mid-command, shouting and pointing his men on, an M1 Carbine in his free hand, in an M-43 jacket and netted helmet with the Screaming Eagle on his shoulder. Put him at the head of a 101st counterattack diorama: relay his orders through the SCR-300 Radioman, drive the assault past "Welcome to Bastogne", under the eye of Capt. Dick Winters.
