The co-pilot flew the right seat, and much of his war was the grinding labor of formation flying. Heavy bombers went to the target in tight "combat boxes" so their guns could cover one another, which meant hours of constant control inputs — riding the prop wash of the plane ahead, nudging throttle and yoke to hold position through flak and turbulence. Pilot and co-pilot traded the controls to keep from wearing out. He was also the crew's insurance: fully qualified to fly the aircraft, he had to be ready to take it over in an instant if the pilot was hit — and more than one shattered bomber came home because the man in the right seat brought it back.

The figure stands in khaki shirt and overseas cap, flight trousers and a shoulder-holstered sidearm, at ease between missions.
