Getting a bomber to its target and back was a feat of navigation done without a single satellite to help. The navigator found the way by older arts: dead reckoning from airspeed and heading, pilotage by landmarks glimpsed through gaps in the cloud, radio bearings, and celestial fixes shot with a sextant through an astrodome. Hunched over his charts in a freezing, vibrating compartment, he kept a running position on an aircraft moving nearly two hundred miles an hour, correcting constantly for wind he could not see. The stakes were high: a bad fix could carry a formation over the wrong, well-defended city, or leave a crew lost over the North Sea with the fuel running out.

The figure stands in his A-2 jacket and garrison cap, Mae West and parachute harness, hands on his hips between missions. He completes the "front office" of a bomber crew diorama — the officer team of the Bomber Captain, the Co-Pilot, and the Bombardier who together flew and fought the aircraft.
