George S. Patton believed in speed, audacity, and attack, and no feat showed it better than the relief of Bastogne. When the Germans surrounded the 101st Airborne in December 1944, Patton wheeled his Third Army ninety degrees, pulled it out of one battle, and drove it north through snow and ice to break the siege — turning an entire army in days, something most generals had called impossible. "Old Blood and Guts" was profane, theatrical, and endlessly quotable, carrying ivory-gripped revolvers and a conviction that he had soldiered in past lives. Brilliant and reckless in equal measure, he was the general the Germans feared most, and the one his own superiors could least control.

The set pairs Patton in service dress — ribbons, star-marked helmet, and the famous ivory-gripped pistols — with his bull terrier Willie ("William the Conqueror"), who wore his own G.I. dog tags and rarely left his master's side. As the anchor of a Third Army display he draws the armor and the men he saved: set him with the paratroopers of "Welcome to Bastogne", his tanks in the M4A3 Sherman, and his commander General Eisenhower.
