The American way of war leaned hard on its junior leaders. Where some armies expected orders to flow strictly from the top, the U.S. Army pushed decisions down to the men who could actually see the ground — the lieutenant peering around a corner, the sergeant reading a street — and trusted them to act on their own initiative when the plan met reality. The company-grade officers who did this were often the derided "ninety-day wonders," hurried through officer candidate school in three months; plenty of them proved, in the field, exactly why the system worked. That habit of decentralized, on-the-spot leadership set the American army apart, and still does.
