American firepower ran on the radio. The U.S. Army's real battlefield advantage was not any single weapon but its artillery — and the ability to mass it fast, so that one observer with a radio could bring the guns of several battalions down on a single point within minutes. The little SCR-536 "handie-talkie," a five-pound set switched on by pulling out its antenna, was the humblest link in that chain, tying a moving rifleman back to his platoon and, through it, to the guns. Its range was modest and terrain-dependent — sometimes only a few hundred yards — but a message that reached the right ear could redirect an entire battle.

The figure walks with the set pressed to his ear, rifle slung, in an M1943 field jacket and netted helmet — a man carrying orders as much as a weapon. He rounds out a platoon command element: pair him with the "Reporting In" radio team, the Infantry NCO with Thompson passing the word, and the Infantry Officer Prone whose orders travel down the wire in a small-unit diorama.
