At Belleau Wood on 6 June 1918, with a Marine attack pinned down in the open wheat, Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly — already a holder of two Medals of Honor, from China and Haiti — is said to have risen and shouted his men forward: "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" They rose and went. The 4th Marine Brigade had been ordered merely to hold the line during the German Spring Offensive; instead it attacked, crossing open fields into machine guns, wire, and gas. Twenty-six days and nearly 5,000 casualties later the wood was theirs — and the Germans, the story goes, were calling them Teufelhunden, Devil Dogs.
W. Britain sculpts the Marine in motion — advancing with his M1903 Springfield held across the body, caught mid-stride rather than posed at parade rest. He wears the M1917 helmet and wool service dress, a full marching pack, and wrap puttees, the kit of a 2nd Division Marine crossing the wheat. Built to move within a scene, he leads a Belleau Wood assault line alongside a Marine standing firing to cover him, a Marine with the Chauchat for automatic fire, and a Marine with a trench shotgun for the close work in the trees.
W. Britain model 13071. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure in an advancing pose on a sculpted groundwork base. Boxed.
