The weapon in this Marine's hands reshaped how the Corps fought. During the Pacific war the Marines built their rifle squad around the Browning Automatic Rifle, organizing thirteen men into three four-man fire teams, each team led by a BAR gunner laying down the base of fire while the riflemen maneuvered. It gave a Marine squad three automatic weapons where the Army's had one, and a flexibility that paid off in the close, chaotic fighting of the islands. The twenty-pound BAR was heavy, and its gunner was a marked man — but he was the heart of the team. This figure, hung with six magazine pouches, is that gunner.
