To a Marine, no one was more beloved than his corpsman — the Navy "Doc" who went ashore on every Pacific beach and crawled into fire to reach the wounded. Trained by the Navy and then run through Marine boot camp, corpsmen with the Fleet Marine Force shared every hardship of the men they served. Their danger was extreme: unlike in Europe, the enemy in the Pacific gave no protection to the Red Cross and often shot the men wearing it deliberately, so many corpsmen hid their markings and dressed like ordinary Marines to survive long enough to do their jobs. The Marines repaid that devotion fiercely — and a great many corpsmen came home with the Navy Cross or the Medal of Honor.

The figure runs forward in Marine HBT utilities and a camouflaged helmet cover, his medical bag at his side — "Doc" moving toward a cry for a corpsman.
