A sailor's whole life fit in a canvas bag. Reporting aboard a new ship, a bluejacket carried everything he owned — spare uniforms, ditty box, rolled hammock — on one shoulder in his seabag, and "dragging" it up a gangway was a rite every enlisted man knew. The undress whites he wore were shaped by long practice: the flat "Dixie Cup" hat, the pullover jumper with its squared sailor collar, and the bell-bottom trousers, cut wide enough to roll above the knee for swabbing wet decks or to peel off over shoes in the water. This was the look of the peacetime fleet between the wars — before Pearl Harbor turned it into a war Navy.

The figure strides along with the seabag and hammock hoisted across his shoulders, a petty officer's rating badge on his sleeve. He anchors a pierside or liberty-port diorama: set him beside the Sailor in Crackerjacks and the Sailor on Liberty with Date, under the command of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.

W. Britain model 13090. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure on a sculpted base. Boxed.
