The 38th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry — known in the field as the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves — was part of the Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps, a state-organized formation of thirteen regiments raised by Pennsylvania in 1861 and transferred into Federal service that summer. At Gettysburg on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, the Reserves were brought forward into the V Corps reserve to fill the gap on the Union left after Sickles's III Corps was destroyed in the Wheatfield. The 9th PA Reserves was part of Colonel Joseph Fisher's brigade in Samuel Crawford's division. The Reserves counter-charged across the Plum Run valley — soldiers afterward called it the "Valley of Death" — and drove the broken Confederate brigades back toward the base of Little Round Top.
This W. Britain figure depicts a 38th Pennsylvania Reserves color bearer in regulation Federal infantry kit — dark blue blouse, light blue trousers, dark forage cap, knapsack on his back, cartridge box on his belt — carrying the regiment's colors. The figure pairs with the other V Corps flagbearers and with the Little Round Top scene sets for a complete Crawford's-division-counterattack diorama. Pair this figure with Union 16th Michigan Flagbearer for a multi-regimental V Corps display; with Defending the Round Tops No.1, the Vincent/O'Rorke scene from earlier that afternoon; or with Col. William C. Oates of the 15th Alabama, the Confederate regimental commander whose troops the Reserves drove out of the Plum Run valley.
