The man who made Federal artillery work as a unified arm was Henry J. Hunt, chief of artillery for the Army of the Potomac. Before Hunt's reforms, Union batteries had been parceled out to individual infantry brigades. After, they were consolidated into army-level artillery reserves that could be massed where needed. The most famous demonstration came on July 3, 1863, at Gettysburg: Hunt ordered his guns to hold fire during the Confederate bombardment that preceded Pickett's Charge, conserving ammunition and giving the enemy the impression his batteries had been silenced. When the Confederate infantry stepped off, Hunt's full counter-battery met them at maximum strength.
The six-figure set captures a Union gun crew in action around a bronze 12-pounder Napoleon: officer or chief-of-piece on the left with sponge bucket, No.1 with rammer at the muzzle, No.2 in shirtsleeves and suspenders carrying ammunition forward, sergeant in slouch hat at the breech, and two crewmen at the trail with handspike running the gun back into battery. Regulation Federal artillery dress throughout — dark blue frock coats, sky-blue trousers. Pair the battery with the matching Confederate gun crew in Confederate Artillery with a 12 Pounder for a counter-battery duel, or set it alongside the Union infantry firing line in Union Infantry Firing and Loading for combined-arms support.
