The 44th New York Infantry was raised in 1861 as "Ellsworth's Avengers" — a memorial regiment for Elmer Ellsworth, Lincoln's young protégé and the first prominent Union officer killed in the war. Ellsworth had been shot in an Alexandria hotel stairwell on May 24, 1861, after climbing to the roof to take down a Confederate flag. A new regiment was raised in upstate New York that autumn with specific recruitment standards meant to honor him — unmarried, of good character, between eighteen and thirty years old, no less than five feet eight inches tall. They mustered in October 1861 as the 44th NY and went on to fight in Vincent's brigade at Gettysburg.
This W. Britain figure depicts an NCO flagbearer of the 44th New York Infantry in regulation Federal kit — dark blue blouse with sergeant's chevrons on the sleeves, light blue trousers, dark forage cap, knapsack with rolled blanket on his back — carrying the regiment's U.S. national colors. The figure pairs with the other Vincent's brigade flagbearers and the Little Round Top scene sets for a multi-regiment diorama showing the brigade that held the Union extreme left. Pair this figure with Union 16th Michigan Flagbearer for the brigade's right-flank regimental colors; with Defending the Round Tops No.1, the Vincent/O'Rorke scene; or with President Abraham Lincoln, who had personally known Ellsworth and had his body lay in state at the White House after his death.
Scale: 1/30 (60mm). Matte-painted metal. W. Britain model 31417. From the American Civil War range. Single figure with stand-mounted flag, supplied painted and ready for display.
