Command at Waterloo was paid for in blood. The set gathers Wellington's senior officers, and the day used them hard. Sir Thomas Picton — the figure in the civilian top hat, his uniform never having caught up with him — led his division through the battle in a plain frock coat and was killed outright by a ball to the head, the most senior British officer to fall. The Earl of Uxbridge, who led the great cavalry charge, had his leg shattered by almost the last shot fired; legend gives him the line "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" Through it all Wellington rode untouched while his staff fell around him — afterward calling the battle "the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life."
The eight-figure set is Wellington's command at Waterloo — the Duke himself in his plain dark coat and low cocked hat, Picton in his incongruous top hat and umbrella, Uxbridge and the other generals in gold lace, a Highland colonel, a hussar officer, and a staff officer. It is the command post of a British Waterloo diorama. Set it behind the line of the British Foot Guards, send the 92nd Gordon Highlanders forward at his order, and screen the front with the 95th Rifles.
