Few British regiments knew North America as well as the 40th. It was formed in August 1717 at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, by Richard Philipps, out of independent companies already serving in the colonies. For decades its companies held scattered posts at Annapolis Royal, at Placentia in Newfoundland and at the fishing station of Canso. In 1744 the four poorly supplied companies at Canso were forced to surrender to a French raid and were carried off to Louisbourg. In 1758 the 40th came back to Louisbourg with Amherst's army, and this time its grenadier company helped take the fortress. The regiment did not leave North America for Britain until 1764.

Don Troiani paints a grenadier of the 40th standing square, his musket held upright at his side. His mitre cap has a buff front embroidered with the crowned GR cipher, and its small red flap carries the white horse of Hanover and the motto Nec aspera terrent. He wears a red coat with buff lapels and cuffs, a red waistcoat and breeches, and buff belts, with a black cartridge pouch marked GR at his waist. A brass-hilted sword hangs at his hip, and tall black gaiters reach above his knees. Display it with Tradition of London's British Grenadiers (Seven Years War), whose description covers the Louisbourg Grenadiers, and with British Grenadiers. Add W. Britain's British General James Wolfe, 1759, who led the 40th's grenadiers at Quebec.
