Long before radios, the bugle was how a Marine detachment heard its orders — a call that could cut across a parade ground, a ship's deck, or the noise of battle when no shouted command could carry. The Royal Marines made that skill into an institution. Their Band Service and corps of buglers became, and remain, among the most admired military musicians in the world, sounding the calls that ordered the day's routine and the great ceremonial pieces — the Last Post over the fallen, the Reveille, the Beat Retreat. A Royal Marines bugler was a trained fighting Marine first and a musician second, and this figure of 1959 shows him in his ceremonial blues.

He completes the Royal Marines cluster, sounding the calls for the Royal Marine Officer and Royal Marine Sergeant of the Napoleonic Corps and taking his place on parade beside the Royal Marine in Full Dress.
