The Confederate cavalry was used differently than European tradition would have suggested. Where the cavalry of Napoleonic armies had screened the main force and charged in formal lines, the Confederacy turned its mounted arm into an independent strategic raiding force. JEB Stuart rode 1,200 troopers in a 100-mile circle around the entire Army of the Potomac in June 1862, then did it again in October. John Hunt Morgan led 2,400 men into Indiana and Ohio in July 1863 — the deepest Confederate penetration of the war. Nathan Bedford Forrest repeatedly cut Union supply lines across Tennessee and Mississippi. Confederate cavalry meant raiding as much as reconnaissance.

The three-figure set captures a Confederate cavalry command group: bugler on a white horse with the instrument raised to his lips, color bearer with the square Army of Northern Virginia battle flag held high, and officer on a brown horse in the cavalry-yellow-trimmed gray frock coat firing a revolver overhead. Bright yellow at the officer's neck and cuffs marks the cavalry branch color, the same yellow Federal cavalry used. Pair the command group with the Confederate Cavalry Three Troopers extending the line at the charge, with General Lee in overall command, or face them off against the matching Union Cavalry command group for a meeting-engagement scene like Brandy Station.

Tradition of London model 0916. 54mm scale (approximately 1/30), white metal, hand-painted in gloss enamel.
