The gray horse is Traveller. Lee bought him in February 1862 from Major Thomas L. Broun for $200 — an American Saddlebred-Thoroughbred gelding originally named Greenbrier, sixteen hands, iron gray with black points and a fast walking gait. Lee renamed him Traveller and rode him for the rest of the war: through the Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, Petersburg, and finally to Appomattox. After the surrender, Traveller carried Lee home to Richmond, then to Lexington when Lee took the presidency of Washington College. The horse outlived the general by a year and is buried a few yards from him at the college chapel.

The figure shows Lee in his Confederate general's frock coat with the three-stars-in-a-wreath collar insignia, gold sash at the waist, sword scabbard at his side, black slouch hat — the working uniform he wore in the field. Traveller stands at the walk, black bridle and saddle showing against the gray coat. Tradition of London paints in gloss enamel, the bright traditional finish that catches the light. Pair Lee with Lee and His Generals for the army's high command staff scene, with Privates Confederate Infantry Marching for the line he commanded, or place him opposite Mounted General Grant for the Appomattox meeting on April 9, 1865.
