Ulysses S. Grant looked like a man you wouldn't notice in a crowd of officers. He wore a plain blue frock coat with shoulder straps — no plumes, no embroidered cuffs, no gold-trimmed sash — and a battered slouch hat instead of a regulation forage cap. Newspaper artists in 1864 sketched him at the front in such mud-spattered field dress that he was sometimes mistaken for a private. The understatement was intentional. While McClellan had ridden the lines in tailored finery and Hooker held court at staff headquarters, Grant rode forward, smoked a cigar, and gave the orders that kept the army moving. This figure catches him mid-gesture: pointing, deciding, moving.
The figure shows Grant in field dress on a bay horse, slouch hat pulled low, right arm extended in the directing gesture that marks every period sketch and photograph of him at the front. The dark blue frock coat is plain except for shoulder straps, the saddle's gold blanket trim catching the eye. Tradition of London paints in gloss enamel — the bright lacquered finish that defined collectors' display cabinets from the Victorian era through the mid-twentieth century. Pair Grant with the staff scene Lincoln and His Generals for the political-military command above him, set him at the head of Union infantry marching, or face him off against General Robert E. Lee for the Appomattox meeting.
