Hitting anything from the back of a moving horse was close to impossible, and Civil War cavalrymen knew it. Even a well-trained horse shifted under the rider, flinched at the noise, and threw off his aim. Before a horse could be ridden into a fight at all, it had to be taught to stand still while guns went off around it, and many never fully got used to it. In practice, troopers who wanted an aimed shot from the saddle reined in, braced the carbine on an arm the way this figure does, and waited for the horse to settle. Firing on the move was for screening, skirmishing, and pursuit, where the goal was to keep the enemy's heads down rather than to hit a particular man.
The figure sits a chestnut horse with white stockings, reined in mid-stride, with his carbine braced across his left forearm and his eye down the barrel. He wears K&C's Confederate cavalry uniform of gray shell jacket with yellow collar and cuffs, butternut trousers, and a gray kepi banded in yellow. His saber hangs at his side, and his haversack, canteen, and blue blanket roll are strapped to the saddle. Ride him out with the Confederate Cavalry Trooper Loading Carbine and the Confederate Cavalry Sergeant Firing Carbine, or put the Confederate Cavalry Officer at the head of the troop.
