The horse under a Confederate cavalryman usually belonged to him, not to the army. Southern troopers were expected to bring their own mounts. The government paid a small daily allowance for the horse's use and reimbursed its value if it was killed in action. If it went lame, broke down from hard marching, or died of disease, the loss was the trooper's. He had to find another horse, often by going home to get one, and a man who couldn't replace his mount could end up transferred to the infantry. For a Texas regiment fighting hundreds of miles from home in Indian Territory, keeping horses fed and sound was a constant struggle, and a good horse was the most valuable thing a trooper owned.

The figure rides a tan horse with white stockings, his weight turned in the saddle as he reaches back for a fresh cartridge to reload his carbine. He wears K&C's Confederate cavalry uniform: gray shell jacket with yellow collar and cuffs, sky-blue trousers, and a gray kepi banded in yellow. A blue blanket roll, canteen, and saddlebags ride with him on a gray saddle blanket. Form a mounted section with the Confederate Cavalry Trooper Aiming Carbine and the Confederate Cavalry Corporal Holding Carbine, with the 29th Texas Trumpeter sounding the calls.
