The 3rd Arkansas was the Texas Brigade's only non-Texan regiment. The Confederate War Department preferred to brigade regiments from the same state — it simplified recruitment, replacement, and political relationships back home — but Hood's Texas Brigade needed a fourth regiment after Antietam, and the 3rd Arkansas was the available unit. It had been raised in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1861, fought through the Cheat Mountain Campaign and the Seven Days, and joined the Texas Brigade in November 1862. The flag this figure carries was made for the regiment by the ladies of Fredericksburg, Virginia, in gratitude for the kindness Arkansas soldiers had shown the town's residents during winter quarters.

This W. Britain figure depicts the 3rd Arkansas Infantry flagbearer carrying the regiment's distinctive battle flag — the Confederate Battle Flag pattern (St. Andrew's cross with thirteen stars), slightly larger than the standard Richmond Depot size, sewn from wool by the ladies of Fredericksburg in 1862. He wears the regulation Confederate gray and butternut kit: shell jacket, butternut trousers, broad-brimmed slouch hat, the bedroll and haversack across his chest, and the cartridge box on his belt. The figure completes the Hood's Texas Brigade flagbearer set when combined with the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas flagbearers — the full four-regimental brigade colors in one diorama.
