The brigade was always "Hood's Texans" even when Hood himself was no longer in direct command of it. John Bell Hood took the brigade in March 1862 — thirty years old, six feet two, a Kentucky-born former U.S. cavalry lieutenant who had been an Indian fighter on the Texas frontier before the war — and led it through the Seven Days, Second Manassas, and Antietam. Promoted to division commander after Antietam, he kept the Texas Brigade in his division. The Texans considered him theirs. He was wounded in the left arm at Gettysburg and lost his right leg at Chickamauga two months later, but his identification with the brigade lasted the rest of the war and is on the unit's name to this day.

This W. Britain figure depicts a Texas Brigade infantryman in the standing-fire stance — body angled, rifle musket leveled, weight back on his right foot. He wears the regulation late-war Confederate kit: gray shell jacket, butternut trousers, the dark forage cap with brass insignia, and the cartridge box on his belt. The Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket is at his shoulder. This figure pairs with the brigade's Standing Firing No.2 for a two-figure firing-line diorama, and with the matched Charging and Falling Back Wounded figures for a complete action sequence.
