Not every warrior in these woods fought for France. In 1756 Stockbridge Mohicans from western Massachusetts joined Robert Rogers' Rangers, and by early 1758 there were two Stockbridge companies in the corps, plus a third of Mohegan and Pequot men from Connecticut. Rogers admired them as hunters and scouts and pushed to keep them. They ranged from the Hudson Valley into Canada, reading trails, taking prisoners for intelligence and striking enemy convoys. The Mohicans served partly to protect what remained of their land. After the war the colonial government and the Board of Trade dismissed their claims anyway, and in the Revolution the Stockbridge men sided with the Americans.
This warrior crouches on a fallen log, one hand reaching down to the ground to read the sign and the other keeping his musket close. His head is shaved to a red roach, and he wears a linen shirt with red leggings. The pose suits either side: a scout for Rogers working ahead of a ranger patrol, or a warrior from the other side checking whether he is being followed. For a ranger patrol, put Rogers' Rangers Private, 1758 behind him. For a war party, put Native Warrior Walking with Caution and "Along the Deer Trail" Native Warrior Walking behind him instead.
