The weapon is carried at "trail arms" — held horizontally at the waist by the right hand at the balance point, muzzle forward, butt back. It was the drill position for advancing across broken ground where the standard "right shoulder shift" would have caught on branches, snagged in vines, or jammed against comrades in close terrain. Trail arms freed the left hand for balance, kept the bayonet from waving in a neighbor's face, and let a soldier move fast through undergrowth without breaking cadence. In the wooded, boulder-strewn ground on the slopes of Little Round Top, it was the only way infantry could move at any speed.

The figure strides forward mid-step, right hand gripping his rifle musket at the balance point with the muzzle carried horizontally forward, bayonet fixed and gleaming past his left knee, left arm swinging with the pace. He wears the K&C 83rd Pennsylvania dress — dark blue frock coat with yellow trim, sky-blue trousers with white gaiters, forage cap with red V Corps Maltese cross badge on top. Blanket roll wraps the top of the knapsack on his back with tin cup and canteen. Pair the figure with Kneeling Infantryman Firing Rifle as the man he's advancing past, with Corporal Shouting at the head of the movement, or with Crouching Advancing as the buddy in bounding overwatch.
