The uniform on this figure is one of the reasons collectors spot the 83rd Pennsylvania right away. In 1862 the U.S. government imported a shipment of French chasseur uniforms, and the 83rd was one of the regiments picked to wear them as a reward for excellence in drill. The dark blue jacket with yellow trim, the green wool shoulder tufts, the full-cut trousers, and the white leggings all came from that French pattern. The regiment kept the look through much of the war, including at Little Round Top. Look at the knapsack, too: "83 P.V." is stenciled across the flap, the way soldiers marked their packs so they could find them again after piling them up before a fight.

The figure crouches low as he moves forward, back bent under the weight of his knapsack and blanket roll, his rifle musket with fixed bayonet thrust out ahead of him. It's the posture of a man advancing across open ground under fire and trying to make himself a smaller target. His white haversack and cartridge box hang at his side. Pair him with Infantryman Advancing (Rifle at Trail) for a skirmish line on the move, with Corporal Shouting driving the line forward, or with Brigadier General Strong Vincent in command of the brigade.
