Most of the men who joined the 83rd Pennsylvania in 1861 signed up for three years. By the winter of 1863–64, the Union army was facing a crisis: those enlistments would run out in the middle of the next campaign, and the army was about to lose its most experienced soldiers. So the War Department made an offer. A man who reenlisted got a bounty of several hundred dollars, a 30-day furlough home, and a "Veteran Volunteer" chevron to wear on his sleeve. If three-quarters of a regiment signed on, the unit kept its number and went home on furlough together. Thousands took the deal, and those veterans carried the Army of the Potomac through the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg to the end of the war.

It's the look of an experienced man moving up to the line, ready to bring the weapon down when the order comes. He wears K&C's 83rd Pennsylvania uniform: dark blue chasseur jacket with yellow trim, green shoulder tufts, sky-blue trousers, and white gaiters, with a red corps badge on his forage cap and full kit including blanket roll and haversack.
