The Ranger ground convoy in Mogadishu was M1025 Humvees and 5-ton trucks — thin-skinned vehicles with no armor beyond a sheet-steel body. On October 3, 1993, Lieutenant Colonel Danny McKnight led the convoy toward the target building to extract the assault force. The convoy took a wrong turn in the narrow streets, then another, then found itself receiving contradictory directions from the Kiowa helicopter overhead — the pilot would call "left at the next intersection," and by the time the drivers heard it over the slow ground-to-air net, they had already passed it. McKnight took heavy casualties, aborted, and returned to base with wounded and dead. The Rangers on the ground would have to hold overnight.
