When the Marines fought their way back into Hue during the Tet Offensive of early 1968, they found a kind of war the Corps had not waged since Seoul in 1950 — house to house, street by street, through a stone city held in strength. In that close urban fighting, mortars did more killing than any other weapon. Fired at a high angle, a mortar round could drop behind a wall or into a courtyard where no rifle or tank could reach, and both sides used them relentlessly. The month-long battle to retake Hue's Citadel became one of the bloodiest engagements of the war, and the mortar crew was at the center of it.

K&C sculpts the set as a two-man crew in action: the gunner kneeling to drop a round down the tube while his partner covers with his rifle, flak jacket lettered "Proud Rebel" over a Confederate-flag helmet band — the personal graffiti Marines really carried in-country. Both wear jungle utilities, flak vests, and camouflage-covered M1 helmets on a sculpted firing position. As the infantry's own artillery, the team anchors a fire-support scene alongside the heavier 105mm howitzer crew, and drops its fire ahead of grunts like the Marines laying down covering fire and the kneeling grunts pinned in the open.

King & Country model VN116. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Two-figure set — mortar gunner and rifleman with mortar and baseplate — on sculpted groundwork bases. Boxed.
