The officer commanding these grenadiers served, in the end, a prince of their own bloodline. The little Duchy of Nassau belonged to one of the oldest dynasties in Europe, the House of Nassau — whose senior branch, Orange-Nassau, had given the Netherlands its royal line. At Waterloo the Nassau regiments fought within the I Corps of the young Prince of Orange, heir to the new Dutch kingdom and head of that very house, so a German grenadier from a state of a few hundred thousand souls stood in the line under the dynasty his own duchy was named for. It was the kind of tangled loyalty that defined the patchwork of small German states caught between France and the coalition.

The figure stands in command — sword in hand, point resting to the ground, the dark green officer's coat with gold epaulettes, the crimson sash and tassels, grey trousers and the black fur cap. He is the head of the Nassau cluster. Form a command group around him with a Nassau Grenadier with Regimental Colour beside him, a Nassau Grenadier Drummer to carry his signals, and a Nassau Grenadier Kneeling Firing to anchor the line he commands.
