John Bell Hood did not want to attack the Round Tops. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, with his division formed up below the Union left flank, Hood requested permission to march his men south around the boulder-strewn hills instead of charging straight at them. Longstreet refused — Lee's orders were to attack the Union flank where it stood. Hood went forward as ordered and was struck in the left arm by shrapnel within minutes. His Alabama and Texas brigades climbed the rocky slope without him, fought their way up to Devil's Den and the lower flanks of Little Round Top, and were finally stopped by the Union regiments Vincent and O'Rorke had put in place minutes earlier.

This W. Britain set is the first Confederate Scrambling Up the Round Tops scene — two Confederate infantrymen climbing through boulders in the assault on Little Round Top. Both wear regulation late-war Confederate kit: gray and butternut shell jackets, tan trousers, slouch hats, the cartridge boxes and haversacks on their hips. One leads with his rifle leveled to fire; the other follows with rifle held forward. The two boulder accessories complete the rocky terrain of the position. The set pairs naturally with the Union "Defending the Round Tops" scenes for the full Little Round Top bilateral diorama. Pair this set with Defending the Round Tops No.1, the Union counterpart scene; with Col. William C. Oates of the 15th Alabama, the regimental commander whose troops attacked this position; or with Scrambling Up the Round Tops, the matching second Confederate scene.

Scale: 1/30 (60mm). Matte-painted metal. W. Britain model 31483. From the American Civil War range. Two figures and two scenic accessories (boulders), supplied painted and ready for display.
