No plan survived contact on a Pacific island. Once the shooting started, an officer's carefully briefed scheme dissolved into noise, smoke, and confusion — radios failed in the heat and humidity, field-telephone wire was cut by shellfire, and the roar of battle swallowed every order. Command came down to what a man could do with his own voice and body: shouting until he was hoarse, pointing, grabbing Marines by the shoulder, sending runners, leading by simply standing up and going forward where his men could see him. It was exhausting and lethally dangerous work. This officer, caught mid-shout with his mouth wide open, is command in the friction of combat.

K&C sculpts the officer mid-command, one hand cupped to his mouth as he bellows an order, an M1 Carbine in the other and an M1911 holstered at his hip, in combat greens and a camouflage-covered M1 helmet.
