There is a moment in every extended firefight when moving a wounded comrade becomes impossible — fire too heavy, extraction vehicles too far, the buddy team too small to lift and cover at once. The order becomes "stay down": hold ground, defend in place, wait for help. In Mogadishu that moment came repeatedly through the night of October 3 into October 4, 1993. Rangers established ad-hoc casualty collection points at both crash sites and defended them for hours. Sergeant Jamie Smith was hit in the femoral artery at the Super 61 site; Rangers and medics worked on him in the dark for hours. He died before extraction reached them.

The two-figure set shows the moment: the wounded Ranger propped against the ground, uniform torn and bloodied, still gripping his M16A2 across his lap; the kneeling Ranger over him with M9 Beretta 9mm sidearm drawn — pistol pulled because at close range in a defensive posture it's faster than the rifle across his back. Both in three-color desert combat uniform; the kneeler's Kevlar helmet mounts a PVS-7 monocular pushed up. A discarded Kevlar helmet lies beside the wounded man.
