The dark blue flag with the gold eagle is the U.S. Regimental Color — every federal regiment carried it alongside the Stars and Stripes. The regulation pattern showed the federal eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, the federal shield on its breast, with a scroll above naming the regiment. Volunteer regiments added battle honors stitched on as they were earned, and names of comrades worked into the silk by women's aid societies back home. The color was the regiment's identity in cloth. Losing it in action was the worst disgrace a regiment could suffer; capturing an enemy's color was the highest battlefield honor.

The seven-figure set captures a Union company in action: officer in long frock coat firing his service revolver, color bearer with the regimental eagle flag held high, drummer beating the long roll, sergeant leveling his musket, two privates loading at the ramrod, and a wounded man falling back. Regulation Union dress throughout — dark blue frock coats and jackets, sky-blue trousers, black forage caps and the officer's slouch hat, white cross-belts and brass accouterments.
