It produced one of the most famous images of the whole war. At Waterloo, as a massive French infantry attack climbed toward Wellington's left in the early afternoon of 18 June 1815, the 92nd Gordon Highlanders went forward to meet it — and at that moment the Scots Greys, the heavy cavalry, came charging up behind them. In the surge, the story goes, Highlanders gripped the stirrups of the galloping dragoons and ran in with them, both regiments roaring "Scotland Forever!" as they struck the French column. Together they broke it, and the Greys rode on to seize a French eagle. The charge was so stirring that it became one of the era's great paintings — Scotland's two regiments, foot and horse, going in as one.
The eight-figure set is the Gordons going in — an officer leading with his broadsword and seven privates charging with bayonets, in red coats, Gordon kilts and the tall feathered bonnet. It is the assault element of a Highland diorama. Bring up the colours and piper of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders behind it, dress the line with the marching 92nd Gordon Highlanders, and launch the charge from the position of Wellington at Waterloo.
