The two GIs wear the future of military clothing. The M-1943 field jacket, introduced late in the war, replaced the Army's patchwork of earlier coats with something genuinely modern: a windproof cotton-sateen shell built around the layering principle, worn over a wool sweater and shirt, with a button-in liner and matching trousers for the cold. A soldier could add or shed layers as the weather turned, rather than rely on a single heavy garment. It was a quiet revolution in how armies dressed for the field — flexible, practical and effective — and it outlasted the war, soldiering on through Korea and shaping military clothing for decades after.
The pair stand in relaxed but watchful poses — M1 Garands in hand, web gear layered over the M-1943 jackets, one resting his rifle butt-down — the look of men on guard or waiting for the word to move. They slot in among the collection's quieter figures: the sentry on Guard Duty, the men Sitting, Smoking & Waiting, and the ready Standing Rifleman. As a standalone vignette at a crossroads checkpoint or filling out a larger winter encampment, they are the connective tissue a diorama needs between its action figures.
