Adolf Hitler was the author of the greatest catastrophe of the twentieth century. From 1933 he ruled Germany as absolute dictator, remaking it into a one-party police state built on racial hatred, and in 1939 he plunged the world into the Second World War — a conflict that killed an estimated seventy to eighty-five million people. Under his direction the Nazi regime carried out the Holocaust, the systematic murder of six million Jews, along with millions of Roma, disabled people, prisoners of war and others. Cornered in his Berlin bunker as the Soviets closed in, he killed himself in April 1945. This figure shows him in the brown uniform and armband of the Nazi Party, arm raised in its salute — the practised image of the man who became the face of evil.

K&C's model captures Hitler as he appeared at the great party rallies of the late 1930s, in the brown tunic and swastika armband of the movement he led, at the peak of his power in 1938 — the year Germany annexed Austria and the regime's violence against its Jewish citizens erupted openly in Kristallnacht. As a historical piece it belongs with the rest of the Nazi leadership K&C has modelled — his propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels and his deputy Hermann Göring — and the stage-managed spectacle they built, the Nuremberg rally stand. For the serious collector these figures document a regime that must be remembered exactly for what it was.
