Every British infantry battalion carried two silk colours, and a royal warrant of 1751 laid down exactly how they should look. The first, the King's Colour, was the Great Union, combining the crosses of St George and St Andrew. The second, the Regimental Colour, was made in the regiment's facing colour, with the Union in the upper corner. At its centre went the regiment's number in gold Roman numerals, inside a wreath of roses and thistles. Each colour measured six and a half feet across. They were carried into action by the ensigns, the battalion's most junior officers, whose rank took its name from the flag. When a line broke, the colours were the point the men rallied to.

This is the battalion's command group. The officer advances with his sword drawn, in a red coat with dark blue facings, a crimson sash and black boots. Two ensigns carry the colours: one holds the King's Colour with his hat in his free hand, and the other points the way beside the dark blue Regimental Colour. The sergeant stands with his halberd upright. The drummer wears a tall cap and a coat heavily laced in white, and plays a red and blue drum. Two corporals with muskets complete the group. Put this group at the centre of British Infantry, with British Grenadiers on the right and British Infantry Eight Privates Firing filling out the line.
